This special family chose to book one of my bespoke family photography experiences at a fair I attended back in the summer.

They were looking for natural family photography that really captured their personalities and memories. They were very clear that they weren’t looking for posed imagery, so my relaxed and natural approach was just perfect for them.

Plan for perfection

As part of my service, I always have a ‘getting to know you’ session, where we talk all about styling, what to wear, types of shots and what the actual shoot will be like. These sessions are a great opportunity for the kids to meet me so they can suss me out before we meet for the shoot!

It was at this session that I really got to understand what this family was looking for. Mum had already started her own Pinterest board of ideas which meant that both she and I were very clear on what we wanted to achieve! We took the time to plan location and timings and through this board it became very clear that wonderful autumn colours and shooting in ‘golden hour’ (the hour before the sunsets) was a must for this family. We discussed clothing for the time of year and carefully selected some bright bold reds and yellows for the kids and more neutral colours for Mum and Dad.

Natural family photography at it’s best

We had arranged to meet in Bushy Park at 4pm, sunset was around 6pm, so we gave ourselves plenty of time to relax and enjoy ourselves. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves with leaf fights, jumping off logs, piggy back rides and bubbles! One of the key things about family photography, particularly with younger children, is to keep things moving and making sure it is fun. I find the moment anyone says “sit there and look at me”… well you just get the cheesy grins.

We discussed getting both natural imagery, a family portrait and individual portraits of the children which we achieved and more.

As we got closer to golden hour, I knew everyone needed a short break so I cracked open my camera case and brought out the snacks, which were happily devoured and gave everyone a burst of energy. It also gave me time to capture some more natural and relaxed family memories.

After a quick stop we played a game of pooh sticks then headed out to the chase the light of the sunset! I’d spotted a beam of sunlight breaking through the trees and the kids had so much fun playing around in the light.

All in all it was a beautiful session that captured some very special memories for them all.

Choosing the very best!

My job after the shoot was a tough one with so many gorgeous images to choose from. I reviewed all the images, selected the very best and hand edited them all.

At their viewing and ordering session, they had already thought about what they wanted to do with their images and knew they wanted to hang their memories on the walls, they just had to decide which ones. This did prove difficult, but with my help and guidance they chose my White Gold Collection – a storyboard frame, ten mounted prints and USB with the digital images from their session all beautifully presented in a gift box and a digital app.

I know they’ll treasure their images for generations to come!
