What to wear for your autumn family photoshoot

Autumn is my very favourite time of year for outdoor family photography.

The colours are spectacular, the sun starts to dip in the sky and produces a magical golden glow and there is a slight chill in the air that positively tingles!

If you have chosen to have your family photoshoot during the autumn you won’t be disappointed. To get the very best out of your shoot, preparing what everyone is going to wear is essential.

Here are my tips on what to wear for your Autumn Family Photoshoot.

No1: Work with nature’s colours

The colours in autumn are beautiful yellows, browns, oranges and deep evergreens (contented sigh…). So choose colours that will complement rather than stand out like a sore thumb. Steer away from Pinks and think red wines, mustards and blues.

No 2: Dress for the location and weather

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, but the weather can be changeable so make sure you are appropriately dressed. Gloves and bobble hats can make great addition to images as well as keeping everyone warm.

No 3: Layers work wonders for body shape and can change up a look

Don’t just stick on a huge bulky coat, that you might think will cover a multitude of sins, as that can make you look shapeless and bigger than you actually are on camera. Stay warm and create shape in your body by using layers.

The benefit of this is you can also remove layers or add a layer to completely change your look.

No 4: Leave big labels and the latest cartoon characters at home

Steer well clear of logo’d clothing, it will distract from you all and your beautiful family photos will start to look like their latest advert. Also, I know little ones might be totally obsessed with Thomas or Ben 10 but in a few years time you’ll look back and regret it.

Using complementary block colours, or very simple small patterns, will keep your images timeless.

No 5: Choose natural fabrics with texture

Natural fabrics look beautiful in images and add texture. Remember that you can achieve this using layers or accessories.

TOP TIP: Lay out everyone’s clothing on the bed the day before. You can check that everything works well together and there won’t be any mad panics the morning of the shoot.
