Five Things That Can Ruin Your Family Photoshoot

by Jo on July 4, 2025

A few tips to help your session flow without a hitch

Let’s be honest—kids are brilliant, spontaneous, and full of energy…but they’re also unpredictable. As a London family photographer specialising in bespoke outdoor photoshoots, I’ve seen it all: tears, giggles, muddy knees, and even the occasional nap on a picnic blanket.

The good news? Your outdoor family photography session doesn’t have to be stressful. A little preparation goes a long way in making your photoshoot smooth, fun, and full of genuine moments you’ll treasure. So, here are five things that can actually ruin your photoshoot—and how to avoid them:

1. Skipping my ‘Getting to know you session.’

I always aim to meet your children before the big day, whether in person here in London or over a quick video chat. It takes a huge chunk of stress out of the session because your little ones already know me as “Jo with the camera,” not a stranger pointing a big lens at them in the middle of the park. When kids feel comfortable, they’re far more likely to relax and enjoy our outdoor adventure—which means beautifully natural photos for you.

2. Worrying (They’ll Feel It!)

I know how much these photos mean to you, especially if you’ve been searching for a London family photographer who can capture your family’s real connection in beautiful outdoor spaces. But try not to stress about the shoot, or during it. Kids are brilliant little emotional sponges—they’ll soak up your anxiety and reflect it right back. Trust me, I’ve got you all covered… even Dad! Your only job on the day is to enjoy being together, surrounded by the beauty of London’s parks and outdoor spaces.

3. Putting Pressure on Your Kids

Please don’t tell your children they have to “be good” or “smile nicely” for the camera. It puts them under pressure and can leave them feeling tense or self-conscious. The best photos come from genuine connection and happy moments. Let them play, explore, and just be themselves—that’s where the magic happens, especially in an outdoor shoot where there’s plenty of space for fun and adventure. My approach as a family photographer in London is always about capturing those natural, joyful moments that tell your family’s unique story.

4. Bribing Before the Shoot

It might be tempting to promise ice cream, a toy, or screen time if they “do well” in the photos. In my experience, this backfires because kids spend the entire session asking if it’s nearly over so they can collect on their promised treat. Instead, leave the bribes at home—I have a few fun surprises up my sleeve that I’ll pull out as needed to keep little ones happy and engaged during your bespoke outdoor shoot.

5. Using Screens as a Distraction

Handing your child a phone or tablet mid-session might feel like a quick fix, but once a screen is in their hands, it’s incredibly hard to get their attention back. Instead, we’ll keep them busy with games, exploring nature, singing, tickles, and all sorts of silly fun. Outdoor shoots are perfect for this—it’s one big playground full of natural distractions and beauty, which makes for gorgeous, authentic photographs.

In the end, the goal of your bespoke outdoor family photoshoot is to capture authentic moments, genuine smiles, and the spirit of your family.
